What’s orange, rough and makes you cringe when you see it?
….It’s every gym owner’s pet peeve and something that makes the biggest difference to the way a gym looks and feels to new or existing members.
Rust doesn’t just look bad, it’s extremely uncomfortable to use and it just devalues the way your gym looks. We all want to make a great impression on people who come into our gyms or home gyms. But how would you feel walking into a gym with old and rusting gear?
Ever walked into a gym for the first time, excited to start a fresh new program, only to see that the dumbbell you’re about to pickup looks like it’s been rusting for years and years. What’s worse is in reality, that dumbbell might only be a few months old. So why is it already rusting!!??
So what’s the solution?
There’s a lot you can do on a daily basis that can keep your dumbbells and most of your equipment from aging. These few little habits are simple, but we believe they can make a massive difference to increasing the longevity of your equipment and creating the best user experience for your members.
And just as a side note, the following tips/habits below are actioned daily in our CrossFit ChasingBetter Gym to keep our gear as new as possible day after day. Year after year!
Tip1 – Implement a daily cleaning routine for coaches
- Cleaning the gym’s equipment should be a daily practice and unless you’re a gym who runs classes around the clock, there’s always going to be time to clean. Set the standard for the coaches on a rotating roster and keep track of what’s been cleaned during the week and month so every piece of equipment get the love and attention it needs.
- What if there’s nothing in the budget for extra hours needed for this new practice. There’s definitely going to be a member in the gym who’d love to swap cleaning duties for a gym membership. An effective opportunity to explore.
Tip2 – Encourage Members to wipe down equipment after they are done
- Sweat is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to rust and there’s no better way to solve this problem by letting your members know to wipe down their gear down before they put it away. This isn’t just good for the equipment, but just good hygienic practices that should be actioned anyway. And especially nowadays.
Tip3 – Rotating Equipment
- So sometimes there’s no going back. Equipment like dumbbells just won’t stay fresh and brand spanking new forever. So set aside a budget for new gear and sell your old gear to home gyms or small up-and-coming gyms. There’s always going to be a market for old equipment. A small investment every year can go a long way when it comes to keeping up with appearances.
We hope these tips help you out. Our mission is to help gyms and individuals with the best equipment that will last a lifetime of use.
Dumbbells in particular are something that most people and gyms will always need and given their heavy usage, a piece of equipment which is easily vulnerable to wear and tear.
